Every year SXSW Interactive brings a pretty diverse group to Austin! From Grumpy Cat, to Hulk Hogan arm wrestling, to Left Shark, to people with pot-bellied pigs as pets, there is something for everyone at SXSW interactive this year. East 6th St. in Austin is shut down and alive with the sights and sounds of technology, and well…a smorgasbord of free refreshments for attendees and tech fans.

This year, Marketo set out to make a splash at the event. Renting out the fantastic Vulcan Gas Company—on East 6th St., in the middle of all the action—we had a fun mix of engaging marketing thought leadership sessions, plenty of places to charge your devices and relax, a sweet photobooth, swag, and a taco bar!

On Sunday, Marketo featured four informative sessions around both marketing best practices and the future of marketing. Let’s take a look at some of the top takeaways.

Transformational Engagement Marketing Through Brand Activation and Consumer Nurturing

Kicking off the morning sessions were John Common from Intelligent Demand and Steve Krizman from Kaiser Permanente. This session focused on how Kaiser Permanente Colorado, with help from their agency, Intelligent Demand, transformed their marketing and revenue generation strategy. Big topic!

John set the stage by discussing the fundamentals of change within an organization and the framework Intelligent Demand uses for revenue transformation:

  1. Synchronize the way you buy and sell with the buying journey
  2. Use holistic, agile methodologies, software, and processes
  3. Crawl, walk, run
  4. Collaboration + Agile Approach = Success

So what was the catalyst for change with Kaiser? Not only was there a new executive asking tough questions about ROI, but their marketing did not take a holistic approach. They had:

  • Clear on growth goals, but no one knew how to get there
  • No lead nurturing, and too much focus on the bottom-of-the-funnel
  • A “spray and pray” approach to programs
  • A leaky funnel—they didn’t know what was succeeding or how
  • Activity based reporting and analytics—there was nothing advanced tying to revenue

So Kaiser reached out to Intelligent Demand to aid in their transformation. Here are the steps they took:

  1. Established up front goals for band awareness—MQLs, sales and marketing alignment, measurable impact on ROI, and they enabled sales and channel partners
  2. Created buyer personas and journeys
  3. Created a multi-channel lead generation program that would enable lead capture and nurture through Marketo
  4. Created messaging that supported the unique buyer journey for both their B2B and B2C business

And the results? Super impressive!

  • $50 million to date in marketing sourced revenue
  • 53% of pipeline influenced by marketing
  • 6,788 opted in leads

Experiments in the Wild

Next up was Kyle Rush from Optimizely to discuss what they did internally to initiate  A/B test on their website, landing pages, and more.

Kyle’s presentation was very informative and included some fantastic tests and the results they yielded—he definitely shared some best practices a marketer can put to work right when they get home. Let’s take a look at some of their best tests:

  • Pre-checking the “Agree to Terms and Conditions” box on a landing page
    • 3% submissions increase
  • Shortening the copy on the landing page and removing much of the company verbiage:
    • 17% increase in form submission
  • Sending healthcare traffic to a personalized version of a web page:
    • 123% increase in content engagement

Definitely some great tips to try right away.

Answering the ROI Question: Connecting Social to Business Impact

After lunch, Matt Zito from Synthesio, and David Parkinson from Nissan, took the stage to present on social media ROI. Social data is everywhere—but how do you transform it from a siloed data set into something that can help you run your business? That is what the presenters set out to discuss.

Matt began by saying that social media is essentially the largest focus group you have access to today. It can give you incredible insight into your customers’ likes and dislikes. In fact, social data can be used in every area of your business, including:

  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • PR and Comms
  • Customer Support
  • Operations
  • Product and R&D

To uncover insights, consider taking these three steps:

  1. Aggregate data from relevant sources—your CRM, marketing automation tool
  2. Analyze and optimize
  3. Build typologies and insights

One thing that the presenters discussed is that you need to segment out discussions, particularly negative sentiments, to determine a pattern. For instance, perhaps you see a lot of negative feedback on social and you think it is affecting your total audience. But, maybe you segment your audience out and learn that it is only affecting a certain demographic. It is critical that you really examine your data in a more specific and targeted way.

If you do this, then you can map your social KPIs directly back to the buyer’s journey:

  • Awareness: Reach
  • Acquisition: Growth of fans
  • Activation: Conversion through the buying cycle
  • Evaluation: Search
  • Purchase Intent: Lead Identification
  • Satisfaction: Social Reputation

He then launched into a set of questions for the panel. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights:

You Need to Adapt to Today’s Consumer Communication Patterns

Today’s consumers are multi-channel and multi-device, but they also communicate in short form. Gerry from Resolution Media called this “Bitliteracy”—communicating via text based messages, visual communication, and quick information at all times.

Additionally, as Blake from Phillips points out, in today’s online world, you are always marketing and always-on. And marketing needs to adapt to this new mentality and have that constant contact with buyers. Gerry pointed out that “marketing is about moments”.

Rebecca from GM agreed and added that we, as marketers, need to think about more than just the sell. We need to create relationships across the entire lifecycle.

Engage with Your Customers By Knowing Their Journey

You need to understand your customers’ journey—and know that it is not going to be linear. There is no way you can tell a story with your content if you don’t understand the path your customer takes. Gerry states that it is all about content in context. 

Alan from Esurance agreed. And, that it is not only about one journey! Everyone has different intentions as they go through their own, individual journey. Where people enter the decision process matters. Ask yourself, how are your customers first touching the brand?

Marketing automation is a must-have for a modern marketing team. But, even though you may have heard this fact or read about it, many marketers are still questioning the exact definition. What exactly is marketing automationand why do you need it? Sometimes at Marketo, we like to take a pause and get back to the basics.

How To Use Dark Posts on Facebook and LinkedIn to Increase Relevance

As a social marketer you are often asked to support many different initiatives going on in your company or organization. Some initiatives could involve brand awareness; others could revolve around demand generation or promoting an event, and so on. Different initiatives also involve different goals. So how do you, as social marketer, manage all the broad initiatives without cluttering the company page and inundating your entire audience with irrelevant posts? My solution—dark posts!

Dark posts are ads that you can create and promote without publishing them on your company’s LinkedIn page or Facebook timeline.

Facebook and LinkedIn both offer this feature (although on LinkedIn it is called “Direct Sponsored Content”).

The Benefits of Using Dark Posts:

  • You can create dark posts for promoting a product or service to a specific targeted audience: You’re able to target an audience that you know will find that ad more relevant than when it is shared with a broader audience. You will also get better engagement on a post that is more targeted.
  • Dark posts enable you to adjust the messaging on your ad, based on the segment you are targeting: For example—your ad copy and image will be different if you are targeting an Enterprise audience as opposed to a SMB audience.
  • Dark posts are also great for local event promotions: If you are hosting an event in the Bay Area you probably do not want folks in New York to see those ads. In this case, you can sponsor a dark post and target the specific zip codes, or cities you are hosting the event in.
  • Dark posts are also a great way to A/B test:  You can test your headlines, images or targeting to optimize their click-through or conversion rates. Dark posts make testing a lot easier since you do not have to publish the same article or ad twice on your newsfeed or company updates.

Test A got a .30% click through rate and Test B received a .21% CTR. In this case, we tested whether adding in more details on the headline worked in our favor, and contrary to best practice, it did.

At Marketo we frequently use dark posts because of the many benefits mentioned above. We have had some good wins from the tests and targeted messages we have sent using dark posts over the last few months.

5 Ways To Make Sure Your Mobile Marketing Is Magical

Many of you are probably reading this blog on a mobile device, and you’re not alone. There are currently 7.2 billion+ mobile devices on the planet and that number isn’t slowing down (more here). Just thirty years ago that number was zero. On the receiving end of those mobile devices is a consumer that is continuously inundated with messages, content, and calls-to-action. Do you have strategy to break through the noise?

Mobile devices play a central (and growing) role in our lives. Once relegated to voice communication and text messaging, these devices are used for everything from monitoring our health, teaching us foreign languages, to decimating our productivity (I’m looking at you, Candy Crush!), and much more.

For today’s marketer, this represents tremendous opportunity, but also enormous challenges. In a world increasingly filled with noise, marketers face the challenge of consistently delivering compelling and meaningful content that drives engagement with their customers.

So how can a savvy marketer consistently deliver meaningful (dare I say, magical) experiences in this strange new world? I’m glad you asked.

1. Mobile Friendly is not Optional

Consumers increasingly device-shift. They may start on your website at their desktop, then continue reading on their mobile device, and continue their engagement on your native app.

2. Be Smart With Your Social Media

Keep in mind that the majority of social media users are engaging via mobile devices. When posting to Facebook or writing Tweets, be thoughtful to utilize links that deliver a high-quality experience on mobile. To create a seamless experience and minimize your bounce rate, try not to drop users onto a page that’s not mobile optimized. Additionally, optimize your content for mobile—including highly visual material that flows well on a mobile screen, versus asking your user to pinch and pull the window to the achieve right size.

3. E-commerce Should Be Native

When consumers are ready to make a purchase, they don’t want to switch devices. If you’re operating in the e-commerce channel, a native mobile app is not a ‘nice to have’, but rather a requirement to ease the friction of purchase streamline the overall experience, and drive conversion. Design your email communications to include links that drive the user to open the app.  Additionally, consider the mobile experience for buyers who want to complete their purchase outside of an app, on a mobile browser and make that experience as frictionless as possible to increase conversion.

4. Measure Twice, Cut Once

Analytics (like GA) can help you  measure the success of your mobile marketing strategies, this is especially important during coordinated marketing campaigns. This will allow way you to quantify the effectiveness of your cross-channel efforts, for example, number of conversions from email clicks, to website signups, or web page views, to app installs. Pay close attention to new visitors experiencing your site for the first time on their mobile device–are they bouncing from a specific page? Getting lost in your onboarding funnel?

5. Test Early and Often

As release cycles accelerate, it’s more important than ever that you catch bugs before they impact your (potential) customers. You don’t want to spend time, money, and effort to develop a new mobile app for a business, only to find out that there’s a design flaw that makes it difficult to use. Conversely, an amazing app isn’t going to be able to capture customers if the download page is confusing or difficult to use.

As you think through your mobile marketing strategy it’s important that it operates as a component of your overall marketing efforts. Mobile is not just another channel, it represents the most personal channel for many of your customers and a unique opportunity to drive lasting and meaningful engagement.
